Teriflunomide is an immunomodulator with anti-inflammatory effects, mainly used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis, including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, and active secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.
Teriflunomide inhibits dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, a mitochondrial enzyme involved in the de novo synthesis of pyrimidines. The treatment of multiple sclerosis with teriflunomide may be associated with a reduction in the number of activated lymphocytes in the central nervous system.
