Riluzole is a central nervous system drug with the main clinical indication of prolonging the life of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or prolonging the time to mechanical ventilation support.
Clinical trials have shown that riluzole can prolong the survival of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Survival is defined as surviving patients who do not require intubation for mechanical ventilation or undergo tracheotomy.
There is no evidence that riluzole has a therapeutic effect on motor function, lung function, fasciculations, muscle strength and motor symptoms. Riluzole has not shown efficacy in patients with advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The safety and efficacy of riluzole have only been studied in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Therefore, riluzole should not be used for any other type of motor neuron disease.
