Comprehensive interpretation of icatibant acetate injection

Icatibant acetate injection is approved in China and is mainly used to treat acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults, adolescents and children aged ≥2 years.

The recommended therapeutic dose of this product for adults is 30 mg/time, administered by slow abdominal subcutaneous injection. Typically, a single injection is enough to treat an episode of the disease. In the case of insufficient relief or recurrence of symptoms, a second injection can be given 6 hours later. If the second injection is not effective enough to relieve symptoms or symptoms recur, a third injection can be given 6 hours later. Do not give more than 3 doses in 24 hours. In completed clinical trials, the number of doses per month did not exceed 8. The recommended dose of this product for pediatric patients needs to be determined based on the weight of children and adolescents (2 to 17 years old), see the table for details. In completed clinical trials, no more than 1 dose was administered during an episode of hereditary angioedema (HAE). The trial dosage regimen is not recommended for children under 2 years of age or weighing less than 12 kilograms because the safety and effectiveness of the drug in this age group have not been established. Dosing instructions recommend subcutaneous injection of this product into the abdominal area. This product should be injected slowly. Each vial of icatibant acetate injection is to be used only once. Granules and discoloration should be visually inspected before administration. The drug solution should be colorless and transparent. Do not administer if product contains particles or is discolored. Disinfect the injection site and administer the subcutaneous injection for at least 30 seconds. The decision regarding administration by caregiver or self-injection should be made by a physician experienced in diagnosing and treating hereditary angioedema. For patients who have never injected this product, the first injection treatment should be carried out in a medical institution or under the guidance of a physician. Adults can inject this product themselves or through a caregiver after receiving training on subcutaneous injections from a medical professional and confirming that the patient can safely and accurately perform subcutaneous injections. Children and adolescent patients aged 2 to 17 years old need to be injected with this product by nursing staff who have received subcutaneous injection training from professional medical personnel.
