Carbetocin Acetate

Effects and Benefits:
Carbetocin is used after elective epidural or spinal cesarean section; it can be given intravenously in a single dose immediately to prevent uterine atony and postpartum hemorrhage. Carbetocin given in the early postpartum period can also promote uterine involution. After either intravenous or intramuscular injection of carbetocin, the uterus contracts rapidly and reaches a clear intensity within 2 minutes. The active effect of a single dose of intravenous carbetocin on the uterus can last for about 1 hour, so it is sufficient to prevent postpartum hemorrhage just after delivery. After postpartum administration of carbetocin, the frequency and amplitude of contractions are longer than those of oxytocin.

Usage and Dosage:
For the prevention of uterine atony and postpartum hemorrhage, a single dose of 100μg (1ml) of carbetocin is given intravenously, slowly and once within 1 minute after the baby is delivered by cesarean section under epidural or spinal anesthesia. Please follow your doctor’s advice for details. Carbetocin can be given before or after delivery of the placenta, but it must be given after the fetus is delivered.
