Excerpt
Deferiprone tablets are prescription medications used to treat chronic iron overload, primarily for iron accumulation disorders caused by chronic blood transfusions (such as thalassemia). They bind to free iron in the body to form complexes for excretion, reducing iron accumulation in organs and lowering the risk of organ damage caused by iron overload. I. Indications and Mechanism of Action Indicators: Patients with thalassemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and other conditions requiring chronic blood transfusions, who have persistently elevated serum ferritin levels (>1000 μg/L) due to transfusions. Mechanism of Action: As an iron chelator, deferiprone specifically binds to ferric iron, allowing excretion through urine and bile, reducing toxic iron accumulation in organs such as the heart and liver. II. Usage and Dosage Oral Administration: Typically, 25 mg/kg three times daily should be taken on an empty stomach (one hour before or two hours after meals). Dose Adjustment: Adjust dosage based on serum ferritin levels, tolerance, and liver and kidney function, strictly following a physician's instructions. III. Common Side Effects and Precautions Common Reactions: Gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, abdominal pain); Joint pain, elevated transaminases; Dark urine (normal due to excretion of drug metabolites). Serious Risks: Agranulocytosis (regular blood count monitoring is required); Abnormal liver function (liver function tests are conducted every 2-4 weeks during treatment). IV. Contraindications and Warnings Contraindications: Individuals allergic to deferiprone, patients with severe liver and kidney failure, and pregnant or lactating women. Precautions: Avoid alcohol during treatment; Avoid combined use of other medications (such as antacids) by at least 4 hours; Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms of infection such as fever or sore throat occur. V. Follow-up and Monitoring Regular examinations: including serum ferritin, blood count, liver and kidney function, and urine iron levels. Efficacy Assessment: If the ferritin level drops below 500 μg/L, consider reducing the dose or suspending treatment. Tip: Deferiprone tablets must be used strictly according to your doctor's instructions. Do not adjust the dosage or stop taking the medication on your own. If you experience any unusual symptoms while taking the medication, contact your doctor promptly and have your blood pressure checked regularly. See more
